Total lets users access essential services such as Messaging, News, Recharge and more even without an active data connection and paves the way for them to get on Data by providing packs at as low as Re.1/-.

Total, built by hike’, has 4 key elements to it that combined together make the end to end experience extremely seamless:

  2. Light Services < 100 kb to 1 MB: Services on Total, take between < 100 kb to 1 MB ensuring a lightweight footprint on the device.
  3. Works without Data: All of the services built on Total can be accessed even without Data via proprietary technology. Developed in-house, the proprietary technology, based on the USSD protocol does the heavy lifting of encrypting, compressing and transmitting data. It has effectively supercharged USSD to help bring an uninterrupted experience to the users even an active data connection
  4. Sachet Data Packs: Users will be able to purchase Sachet Data Packs starting as low as Re. 1 from inside the Total experience itself with the goal of lowering the cost of access and introducing people to data.

Over the last 6 months, Hike has worked extremely closely with telecom partners to enable the USSD Technology & Data Upsell on Total. Airtel, Aircel and BSNL are the telecom partners which cover over 42% of the telecom market.

On the device side, Intex and Karbonn are the first Smartphone partners. ‘Total, built by hike’ will be available on 4 models across Intex & Karbonn. The Intex devices with Total are Aqua Lions N1, Aqua Lions T1, Aqua Lions T1-Lite and the Karbonn device is A40 Indian. The devices are scheduled to hit the shelves starting 1st March 2018.

Total users will also get up to Rs. 200 to spend on any of the services when they buy one of these devices.

According to recent reports, the Internet is out of the reach of nearly 736 million Indians. The launch of ‘Total, built by hike’ will drive access to information and familiarity with the services that the world of connectivity provides. So whether it’s simply chatting with friends or making digital payments, a whole new set of people will be able to experience these services.

Tech behind Hike Total?

The services with star badge on them, work on a proprietary technology developed by Hike called UTP – Universal Transfer Protocol, which enables these services to run with complete User Interfaces as if they were running on internet to provide beautiful, never seen-before experiences without data.

When you use star services on TOTAL built by hike phones, UTP does the heavy lifting of encrypting, compressing and transmitting the data quietly behind the scenes. On the other hand, developers write their applications the same way they would for HTTP. Whenever a no-internet connectivity scenario is encountered, UTP automatically kicks in and the app continues to function seamlessly.

What is USSD – technology behind Hike Total?

Hike Total is built on USSD – Unstructured Supplementary Service Data. USSD is a communications protocol used by GSM mobile phones to communicate with the mobile network operator’s computers. USSD can be used for WAP browsing, prepaid callback service, mobile-money services, location-based content services, menu-based information services, and as part of configuring the phone on the network. Unlike Short Message Service (SMS) messages, USSD messages create a real-time connection during a USSD session. The connection remains open, allowing a two-way exchange of a sequence of data. This makes USSD more responsive than services that use SMS.

As part of digital India push and cashless India, USSD based payment services was started in 2016 by the Government of India. *99# service has been launched to take the banking services to every common man across the country. Banking customers can avail this service by dialling *99#, a “Common number across all Telecom Service Providers (TSPs)” on their mobile phone and transact through an interactive menu displayed on the mobile screen. *99# service is currently offered by 51 leading banks & all GSM service providers and can be accessed in 12 different languages including Hindi & English.
