The recent report published by Ericsson ConsumerLab on India’s consumer expectation and need for mobile broadband reports that an average Indian spends 3 hours 18 minutes on their smartphones per day. That’s 20% more in 2 years.
- 63% increase in app usage in the last two years
- Indians spend over 3 hours a day on their smartphones, and 25 percent of consumers check their phones over
100 times a day. 1/3 of time is spent using apps
- The majority of time is spent on chat, social media, and gaming apps
- 24% of smart phone users use chat apps for business purposes
- 43% of the webpages took more than 43 seconds to load
- 44% of the time the user does not have access to a mobile broadband network
- Video consumption is growing
- 65% prefer streaming over downloading but 4 out of 10 videos buffer or stall
- Smartphones are used more than TV’s today
- 2X increase in data consumption
Social and chat apps are the reason why most consumers buy smartphones. But this is not true in case of matured smart phone users who says their usage of smartphones are not limited to social apps or chat apps.
Mobile is the future
Mobile usage is evolving. The most popular way of consuming videos is through chat apps. 1 in 3 users watch videos shared by friends. Indian smart phone users now spend 191 minutes per day on smartphones, compared to 128 minutes watching TV.
The Google play store has more than 1 million apps now and more than 50 billion downloads per day worldwide.
One of the major findings from the study is that there is a discrepancy in consumers expectation and their actual experiences. This is mainly because of the poor network performance, coverage and speed.
Given the fact that people have more choice over selecting the best smartphone needed as per their requirement, it’s up to the network providers to provide the best and best network for the users.
