It’s always good to speak about food. Especially in Kerala, we say that you can make friends easily if you can provide them good food. Kerala is known for its spicy, delicious and quality food. But at the same time this has been a problem for people from other state or even people within Kerala when they go another district to find out the best place for having good food. While viewing the beauty of Gods own country, what if you have an online guide to help you find out the best restaurants and the menu they serve?
To solve this problem, Pretheesh Thomas and Boney Mathew decided to start Koottan.com. (Koottan is a Malayalam word for Curry and used often by localites)
Koottan.com – A revolutionary new way to find good food. Koottan helps you to find the food you want and crave.
“We are not a restaurant directory service. We bring the experience to you before you even visit the restaurant. We share our experiences and the experiences of the community through Koottan, says Pretheesh”.
How is Koottan different?
Koottan provides you with useful features to help you find the right restaurant/cuisine for you. We will guide you with community generated reviews, restaurant ratings, food ratings and social recommendations and help you discover restaurants that will serve your dining needs.
Koottan doesn’t sell food. Koottan has partnered with the top restaurants in Kerala to provide you with unique offers and discounts.
The site helps even the smallest teashops and bakeries to build their reputation online by giving them the visibility they deserve and, if the reputation is good, it equates to their profitability. All the listings are free currently. Koottan has close to 600 restaurants listed on the website, serving people from 18 localities and tourists visiting Kerala. Koottan.com was released in Kerala in June 2014 and the company is incubated at Startup Village, Kochi, Kerala.
“We believe this will make a huge difference to the quality of service and food provided to you by restaurants in Kerala. Our ultimate goal is to become a one-stop-shop for everything related to food.”
We are always working improving your experience by adding useful features, paying close attention to your feedback and criticism and, in parallel, reaching out to restaurants personally to bring them on board. Keep an eye out for our mobile application coming up in the next few weeks, says the founders.
Spinack.com is another website by the founders in Tanzania’s Dar Es Salaam bringing a similar experience to the customers there. The founders are also planning a 2015 New Year’s launch of hyperdiner.com, a global version of koottan.com and spinack.com.
Koottan.com is looking for strategic partners and investors as this is a major component of their expansion plans.

My Take on Koottan.com!
I liked the concept of Koottan.com. It is crafted exclusively for Kerala. While we have so many restaurant review websites like Zomato, Burrp in India and Yelp in US, it would be interesting to see how Koottan.com is placed in this segment. Recently Zomato has started its operation in Kochi and they are covering the entire Kochi city.
What makes Koottan different is that it offers exclusive deals and offers for its subscribers, an advantage over their competitors. All these services allow the users to search for restaurants by location, scan reviews and offer their own opinions. The point of differentiation will be updating the list frequently by collecting the menus, updating address and phone, and geocode the locations. The major part of revenue could be from display advertisements on the websites and exclusive deals/offers for the customers. The listing is free now. I also like the expansion plans of the founders as they are concentrating on the lesser known markets which will give them the early mover advantage. Lets wait and see how they weave their dreams!
Wishing the team best of luck and hoping to see Koottan.com reaching heights soon and become the lonely planet of food in Kerala!
