appStar is the Annual Developer Contest conducted by Vodafone, for developers across several countries of African & Asian continent, to promote local talent & bring them to the international stage. If you have an innovative and cool app that you have built or as an idea that you want to develop and showcase, appStar is the right platform for you.
Vodafone appStar is conducted at two levels, domestic and international. Starting with the domestic contest, all developers from India will compete against each other. The winners will then move on to compete at the international level.The date for domestic competition is from 29th September to 30th November.
In International contest, the best two developers of each country (one established developer & one upcoming developer) would compete against developers from other countries, where they would get the opportunity to showcase their app live to a large audience. The final winner would be announced at International Contest.
The prize includes cash prize of Rs. 50, 000 and the grand prize is a trip to Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Gadgets and Amazon Vouchers worth USD5000.
Vodafone India supports carrier billing API, Location API, messaging API that a developer can use to get better value from your app and improve customer experience.
The contest is open for citizens from Ghana, Kenya, India, Tanzania and South Africa and you should have developed an app for iOS, Android or J2ME or WP8. But remember the apps built for your clients won’t be considered for the contest.
You can develop apps on Android, J2ME, Windows Phone 8, iOS and BlackBerry.

- Best ‘App for Good’
Vodafone Network API Integrated app categories includes:
- Best use of Location API
- Best App using Payment APIs
- Best Overall App using Vodafone APIs

Each category winner gets a grand prize of Rs. 50,000 each. The local round ends on November 30th, 2014. The judging criteria is based on quality of the app developed, innovation of the idea, local relevance and international applicability.
The last edition of appStar had over 3000 participants from 6 countries across Middle East and Africa competing for the international round and over 500 app submissions were made.
