Flush with cash and eager to expand, the online restaurant search app Zomato has acquired Turkish based startup Mekanist. With the acquisition, Zomato will now cover over 50,000 restaurants across Turkey. This is Zomato’s second acquisition within a month. Zomato recently acquired UrbanSpoon for $55M.
Zomato has raised $60M funding from Sequoia Capital and Info Edge in last November. They have raised $113.8 M in 6 Rounds from 3 Investors till now. Mekanist is Zomato’s seventh acquisition. Previously they have acquired UrbanSpoon, Menu Mania, Obedovat, Lunchtime, gastronauci and Cibando.
Founded in 2008 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, Zomato provides information for over 282,000 restaurants in over 20 countries. Post acquisition, Zomato will now be present in 22 countries, list over 1 million restaurants, and have 95 thousand reviewers.

Over the coming months, Zomato will be integrating the Mekanist website and mobile app content into Zomato’s, and both teams will be working closely to ensure users get the best of both worlds. Additionally, Ali Eyüboğlu (Co-Founder and CEO of Mekanist) will transition to lead the combined teams in Turkey, and Zomato’s current leadership team in Turkey will move to a more global role in India.
Started in 2007 by Ali Eyuboglu, Mekanist lists more than 50,000 restaurants in Turkey making them the leaders in Turkish market.
