As per the latest emarketer report, India will be the second largest smartphone market exceeding the user base by 200 million users by 2016. Currently in third position, India will surpass US by 2016.
Recently Jana, the makers of app marketing platform mCent in their report revealed the top 25 installed mobile apps in India. The statistics are based on analysis of data usage from an 8 percent sampling of Indian Android phones on which mCent was installed.
According to the analysis, the Communication category includes messengers, like WhatsApp, and mobile browsers. Considering the popularity of UC Browser and others, it is not surprising that most of the apps fall into this category.
Paytm is the only shopping app in the top 10 list. Most of the top 10 apps includes categories like communication and social networking. Interestingly many of the file sharing apps also listed in the top 20. Apps like Shareit, Xender are some of the most used apps by Indian users. This reveals that the Indians use smartphone as a storage device as well.
30% of the top 25 apps are developed by Indian mobile development companies. The only game that got into the list is Candy Crush Saga.
Facebook owns the top 2 messenger apps – Whatsapp and Facebook. Communication leads the category list by 33% followed by shopping and tools.
Paytm leads the shopping apps followed by Flipkart, Snapdeal and Quikr. Newshunt is the only news and magazine app listed in the top 25. Newshunt is the a regional news aggregator for mobile.
