Quikr, India’s No. 1 cross category classifieds business, announced the launch of vernacular language support for consumers accessing Quikr’s platform. Tailored to break the language barrier for India’s diverse population, Quikr allows consumers to choose from seven different languages– Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati and Marathi to browse as well as post ads in.

Quikr goes Vernacular

This new feature allows consumers to browse, search, post ads and interact with buyers and sellers in their language of choice allowing a large number of non-English speaking consumers in India that have thus far been unable to transact online. Quikr has leveraged various technologies to also ensure there is no delay in rendering ads in any of the available languages on the platform.

Talking about the need for local language support, Pranay Chulet, Founder and CEO, Quikr said, “We are a made in India business that has always focused on what the Indian consumer needs. Quikr’s competitor OLX is available in Hindi and English. Quikr’s launch of Vernacular platform is just a day after Snapdeal, India’s ecommerce marketplace launched its multi lingual mobile application.

As per the Business Standard article, there are about 950 million mobile users in India out of which 250 million are English speakers and the rest are literate in local languages but not comfortable with English. According to a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India and IMRB International, the current internet user base in India is set to grow at 39%, aided by increase in local language content. Rural India will be the primary driver of this growth at 75%, while urban areas will see a growth of only 16%.

This is a good move as these companies are trying to expand their user base beyond the urban India. Even recently Flipkart said that most of their traffic comes from tier 2 and tier 3 cities of India. It’s good to see that these companies are trying to service their customers rather than just concentrate on the user acquisition.
