After many failures and shut downs, online grocery market in India is taking up. Indian online grocery market is estimated to be less than $ 100 million and is expected to cross $25 billion by 2020. According to retail consultancy Technopak, the online grocery retail market is growing at 25 to 30 % in the metros and other large cities in India. What attracts customers to online grocery is the convenience to purchase items and the offers/discounts that they get from these online stores compared to offline kirana stores. Time sensitive Indian urban citizens after their gruelling day in office doesn’t want to spend time searching for grocery in the local kiranas. With the advent of technology backed online stores, grocery shopping is easier and time-saving for all. People can order their daily needs, while driving back to home and by the time they reach home, the delivery is made.
We have seen a lot of shut downs in this segment due to high costs and low margins. Whether to go for marketplace model or inventory led model is the big question that these companies facing now!
