Movies are always much more than just entertainment. They motivates people, makes them to think, spread meaningful messages and of all the above, they are a medium between the story tellers and the general audience. From each movie that we see every year or at least to say, from the majority of movies, we pick-up bits and pieces of information and inspiration. India has produced several inspirational movies in the past which is an eye-opener for every movie goer in India. Biographical movies like Gandhi, Bose – The forgotten hero, Sardar, Mangal Pandey, The legend of Bhagat Singh, Bhaag Milka Bhaag, Mary Kom, M.S.Dhoni, Neerja and many more has always inspired us and made us realize the value of mankind and value of living.

One of the most awaited movie of the year ‘Dangal’ was no different. Even though the story line is about a father who want to make his country proud through his daughters, the movie has much more to offer. Those who have watched the movie knows that, if you haven’t, I would say that you missed a wonderful great movie. Not because of the star cast, but because of an inspirational story line. Dangal as a movie is a great entertainer and you will feel motivated. But more importantly, it will make you think about your life goals and the importance of having a clear vision for your life. The movie showcases the importance of hard-work and there is no secret sauce to success other than hard-work.
So here goes, 5 most important lessons for life from one of my favorite movie of the year, Dangal.
1.Set your Goal and Focus on it
When Mahavir Singh Phogat couldn’t win a gold medal for his country in an International tournament, he made sure that he will achieve his dream through his son. But God had different plans for him. When he came to know for the fourth time, god gifted him a girl child, there was a situation where he gave up his dream. But he realized that whatever the child be, a girl or a boy, they are capable of doing the impossible if mentored properly. Follow your heart and your dreams will come true. He had set his goal even before his daughters were born and he never got diverted from his goal. I liked the dialogue in the movie, when he said to the coach that for him winning a gold medal is the ultimate aim than winning just a medal. [silver or bronze]
If you have set a goal for your life, you should not divert your focus until you achieve your goal. So as a new year resolution, I would suggest you to make a bucket list of goals for you to achieve in 2017. Write down your goals and every day, go through your goals and check whether you are progressing in the right direction. If not, focus on your goal and work towards it.
“When you have a dream you’ve got to grab it and never let go.” – Carol Burnett
2.There is no secret sauce to success
There is no secret sauce to success other than hard-work. Dangal teaches us the importance of hard-work in your life and how it helps in achieving our dreams. Everyday Mahavir Singh Phogat, orders his girls to start training as early as 5 in the morning. Even though the training regime is tiring, this helped them to focus on their goals.
Successful researcher Napoleon Hill in his book “Law of Success” has mentioned that “there is indeed a secret sauce to success”, based on his field research of some 500 folks, including Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, in the American entrepreneurial élite of the 1930’s. He has written that the quality of the service rendered, plus the quantity of service rendered, plus the mental attitude in which it is rendered, equals your compensation. The more you give, the more you get. You need to go an extra mile to find out the what is hidden and ultimately achieve your goal.
The coming year 2017, try waking up early. Waking up early isn’t an easy habit to cultivate. But if you Google a bit, you will get at least 10 ways to wake up early before the sunrise. Notable early risers include entrepreneurs like Sir Richard Branson, Marissa Meyer and our own Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi. Early risers keep themselves fit and healthy and it motivates and energizes them through out the day.
“Don’t stop chasing your dreams, because dreams do come true.” – Sachin Tendulkar
3. Cannot run away from your past life learnings
Sachin Tendulkar always urged youngsters to stick to the basic techniques of cricket rather than following the flashy T20 cricketing shots. The new age techniques will not make them a better batsman. They might be able to score a fifty in a T20 match but will not help them in the long run. Tendulkar advised the young Mumbai cricketers to focus on the basics of the game and not to give undue importance at attempting new-age strokes like the reverse sweep and switch hit.
Even in Dangal movie, when Geeta Phogat lost most of the international matches at the start of her career, she was giving importance to new techniques rather than focusing on the techniques she learned from her father. The traditional methods has still relevance even in the new digital era. When you are struggling to find an answer, you may be surprised to know, how much you already know. If you can focus and think back to what you have learned in the past, the answer could be something you already know.
“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs
4. Believe in yourself
A mentor can only guide you or coach you to success. You need to work harder towards your goal. For that you need to believe in yourself. Never give up. There is always another plan or another strategy that can be improvised. If you think you are out of options, think harder.
In the movie, when Geeta Phogat is fighting hard for her gold medal point, she thinks about the best advise her father has given her. Taking a 5 point is one of the difficult thing in wrestling, but not an impossible one. 5 points are awarded for a take down brought about by a throw of grand amplitude in free style wrestling. And she believed in herself to take that 5 point during the dying seconds of the match.
As 2017 is approaching us , believe in yourself and feel the change. Try doing things you have never done or are afraid of doing. Doing things that you have never done, will boost your confidence to take up more responsibilities and achieve more.
“One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.” – Arthur Ashe
5. Set a strategy and plan
Even life is like a game. You need to have a proper strategy and plan that will guide you to success. In the movie, Mahavir Singh Phogat has a strategy and a plan against each opponents that his daughters fight. Before every match, he goes through the entire video and decode what has gone right and what has gone wrong. Based on the facts, he develops a plan for the next match. When the national team coach asked Geeta to attach against a tough opponent, Mahavir Singh Phogat advised her daughter to keep calm and defend well so that she can wait for her opponent to make mistake. Each game is different and you need to have different strategies & plans for each game.
When M.S.Dhoni asked Joginder Sharma to bowl the last over in the T20 world cup, little did the world know that Dhoni had a master stroke plan behind this move. Pakistan had their best batsman in the crease (Misbah) and Dhoni had options in Yuvraj, Yousuf Pathan, Harbhajan. He was sure that Misbah might go all out against the Indian spinners than a medium pacer. The rest is history.
In the movie Dangal, we can see even in the difficult situations, father asked his girl to keep calm and wait for opportunities rather than going against the odds. He had a strategy in place which worked in favor of his daughter.
“The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do.” – Michael Porter
Geeta and Babita Phogat has won more than 20 international medals between them. The story of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters is an inspiration on the reel as well as in real life. But the team behind Dangal has made a good effort to showcase their journey of hardships and crave out an inspiration from their story. Hope this will inspire few of us and help them achieve their goals for the coming year and lifetime.
Wishing you everyone a happy and prosperous 2017.
